Front Gate actually consists of two gates, the northernmost of the two gates, 40m-high Zhengyang Men (Sun-facing Gate) and the Arrow Tower (Jian Lou) to the south, and both date from the Ming dynasty.Zhengyang Men was the largest of the nine gates of the inner city wall separating the inner city from the outer, or Chinese City. The Arrow Tower was originally connected to Zhengyang Men which was demolished in the 20th century.With the disapperance of the city walls, the gates sit out of context. To the east now house shops, former British-built Qian Men Railway Station and the Old Station Theater where you can watch Beijing Opera performance.
